The Things They Carried 1-39

In the first part of this reading section, "The things they carried," they talk about the things they carried during war and the hardships that were faced. It really makes one realize the burdens that they had on them at all times and how physically and mentally strong one had to be to endure all of this. Also there is a lot of emotion that a soldier has to carry with him too because of the fact that they are fighting for their life.

Soldiers over in Nam had people back home that htey loved and Liutenant Cross was one of those kind of people who couldn't get entirely focused because of the fact that he constantly thought about the person he loved, Martha. The emotional burden on soldiers and the paersonel items that they carry reflect on the things that they love and the it all adds to the total weight that they carry with them. Without some of these things soldiers would not be able to handle being in this war without something that is special to them and something from home. Many of the soldiers have a meaning with what they carry and some of the things t hey carry, they have a protective meaning for them and help them in the war.

In order for the soldiers to get by from day to day they have to have fun and joke around with them because at the end of each day they can refill what they need and again the next day they do the same. The war life is a tough life on kids that are over there. Young kids in the war die because of the reason that if they don't follow orders thay will get hurt.

Gatsby 8&9

The occurence of how things ended in the story kind of opened my eyes to a few things in the real world that we live in and it made me out the pieces together for what things still actually happen today.
The green light at the end of Daisy's dock represent and symbolizes Gatsby's dream that he is chasing throughout the book. It shows that he and Daisy are connected and can both see the green light, but what Gatsby doesn't realize is that the light is already in the past and whatever he does now just takes him farther away from his dream that he has, the "American Dream." When Gatsby is killed and lays at his empty house it shows how he came up empty handed and never met his goal to be with Daisy.
Another aspect that came to me was how the classes of people back then are so much similar to how they are now. The people with all the money constantly thought they were better than everyone else back then and treated people wrongly. Back in tis time period people did things to lead people on as did Daisy with how she made Gatsby believe that he could achieve his dream, but really it was already lost. People were careless in these times and didn't take responsibility for their actions. This book really teaches you a lesson and how society is the same then as it is now.

Gatsby Chapter 6&7

In these chapters I found some points that really stuck out in my mind and things that still connect with today's society.
Gatsby starts out life like we all do. He started off in the midwest working on Lake superior and one day he meets a guy named Dan Cody who is very wealthy. After Gatsby meets Dan he wants to become just like he is and try to live like everyone dreams of living. Living the American Dream is everyones dream in life, but very few ever get the chance to live it. Gatsby strives to live in wealth like Dan does and eventually gets to that point in his life. Gatsby also thinks that his wealth will bring back Daisy into his life, but what he doesn't realize is that money can't buy him happiness. I feel that this is going to bite him back in the end.
Another thing that I thought was strange was when Gatsby was trying to convinve Tom that Daisy loves him instead of Tom. Even though Daisy confessed to Gatsby that she loves Tom. Gatsby still thinks that the only reason she loves Tom is because Gatsby used to be poor. Gatsby needs to accept the fact that his money can't buy back Daisy or win her over from Tom.When Gatsby is willing to take the blame for Daisy when she strikes another car and it was clearly her fault, it shows me that Gatsby is willing to do anything for her sinced he loves her so much. Gatsby is losing hope when he finds out Daisy is happy with Tom and that his dream is fading and being crushed.
